What a poignant way to start off tonight's barn burner.
So my sources (the Internet) tell me that the once-defunct Arena Football League is coming back to fruition. It received a spit spine and is the new improved Arena Football One. I ask this. Why? Sure it's fun to imagine playing on half a field, with your wide receivers running routes like my boy Sam at an all you can eat BBQ, but come on. Is it a D-League? As a player, is it an excuse to tell your significant other that your "NFL dream" can still happen? Or, is it simply a league that gives my beloved Hampton Roads area a team to root for. Wait a Dunn minute! No Norfolk team?! Then by all means, can it. Jon Bon Jovi doesn't deserve a football team anyways.
Speaking of playing sports like you're in you're own backyard, the NHL continued their "Ooh see look what we did. Cool huh? Now, can you watch us?" gimmick of the season and played another outdoor hockey game. End result was a solid win for the Bruins as they chase Buffalo in the standings, but the real winners here? No one. Now, I'm all for outdoor games, and I am sure Recchi and the boys felt like they were 8 years old again skating around the ice outside. But give me a game that I could still enjoy in the upper tier section, in a different sports stadium. Imagine you allow the Lakers and Celtics to go....no scratch that. I can hear the naysayers already. Give me the Thunder and Bobcats and let these kids go hard. Not NBA hard, but Rucker park, we're outside now, on the blacktop, "The Goat"/Don Cheadle style and see how entertaining THAT would be. Then ask me how outside hockey compares.
Speaking of going hard, since moving up north I get the "pleasure" of watching the two worst teams (not by record, just off principle) in the NBA compete night in and night out. During their latest snooze fest, I noticed D'antoni finally took Nate Robinson off punishment and let him leave his room in the tune of a 41 point, 8 assist outburst. I mean he was drunk all over the court. If he tweeted it, I could of sworn he was Bow Wow. (Side note: Is Bow Wow even old enough to drink yet? Didn't I just see him in Like Mike?) But I digress. I guess the $25,000 fine woke him up. Or he played against a mediocre PG. Who'd they play again? The Hawks. Aah and the post shall set you free. Congratulations Mike Bibby on your 5,000Th assist, and for falling off the face of the planet.
Speaking of garbage, lucky for my Wildcats Pitino didn't try and seduce Bibby and Miles Simon back to college, and in turn my boys smacked Louisville today. Distribution of the ball and strong D led to a decisive win. 18/18 for the boy Cousins. Allow me to bask for a second. When was the last dominate UK squad? Exactly. Oh God grant me one more wish and let us see Duke in the dance. Where's your Laettner turn around now?
Lastly, I'd like to touch on something I've debated about for months now. Is Tebow going to be a solid NFL QB/player? Simply put, YES. Before you disagree think of it like this. How many big armed, Heisman trophy caliber, "solid" QB's have gone to the NFL and miserably flopped? Brady Quinn already, Leinert, Weinke, Crouch, too many to count. Heck I'd even put Sam Bradford in this bunch because I don't trust that weak shoulder. Now think about athletic QB's who have transistioned to solid ballers. One particular reminded me alot of Tebow when he was in college. Not a prototypical strong arm, terrible release point, but great wheels, and a killer winning instinct. Who? No not Vick, although he would qualify. The answer is none other than Mr.Crazy himself Vince Young. I NEVER thought Young would develop into a good, even decent, QB, but I have to say the man can just win. His team rally's around him and he delivers. This is the player I think Tebow will be. Maybe not a QB, but he will play. Have you seen the size of this kid. Hey Zeus, I don't think John McClain could stop him. And for good measure, who's BCS yardage record did Tebow just obliterate like Tyrone Biggum's $450,000 crack stash? Yep, Vince Young's. J/S
Tomorrow's edition will feature my NFL playoff wrap up. So Adam , there's your Saints/Colts breakdown. And for the record, neither is in my Super Bowl. Til next time.

ReplyDeletelets be serious where would the nfl be without kurt warner rob bironas and jay feeley! as long as there is semi pro, the afl is a close number 2 the the nfl. they do have more teams than the ufl.... Unless Nancy Kerrigan performed a one-foot axel before the third period...no one care's about the outdoor hockey match. how about they perform cricket in madison square garden..now that's prime time television. speaking of don cheadle is he going to play Anson Carter in the story of his life... i guess that would make you Jarome Iginla! you mean the same christian laettner with a gold medal from the dream team? hoy many uk players were on that team???? tebow is the great white hype. yes i brought race into it like michael irvin about tony romo....the reason i bring it in is if tim tebow is as good as we think..he will be the first real white scrambling qb. no f what you heard steve young does not count, just because he could evade a tackler does not mean he could have possibly ran for 1000 yards..whats the most he even had in a season? not 600//and i dare someone to mention mark brunell...the only thing he's running is his mouth to call plays to brees. he's no ya tittle! go tebow go
ReplyDeleteTrue about the AFL, but atleast the UFL is billing itself as a minor league. And isn't non-NFL players options better in the CFL or World League. The comp is better, as is the pay. Why make Americans settle for mediocre football?- Dunn
ReplyDeleteI think Tebow can be solid in the NFL - if he gets the right offensive coordinator. Take a look at Vick - he never got to do what he does best (throw the deep ball) because they kept him in a West Coast Offense that emphasized what he does worst (throw a 5 yard slant). If they can get Tebow in a system similar to what Pittsburgh runs for Roethlisberger full of intermediate to deep routs to open up running lanes if noone is open he can be a good QB. And, Sam. - you can't possibly call Tebow the "first white scrambling quarterback". Fran Tarkenton is 6th all time in passing yards and 4th all time in rushing yards by a QB. He was Randall Cunningham and Kurt Warner rolled into one before either of them even stepped foot on a field. You can't put 1000 yards in a season as the mark to define a scrambling QB considering Vick is the only one who has ever done it and Randall Cunningham only had one year of his career where he ran for more than 625 yards. Remember, sacks count as negative rushing yards for QBs.
